Blue bell

This tiny pub in Fossgate is one of York's best kept secrets. The atmosphere is incredible and the pub shows an almost religious devotion to the quality of the beer. Note that the service can be a little rude, but that's part of the charm of this place. Similarly, ignore all the orange 'Private Party' signs (there to 'prevent the wrong crowd' on matchdays) and open the door to a small but excellently kept Edwardian pub with a real fire in winter and candles at night.

Faucet in York

This pub bucks the trend of other less glamorous station bars – instead, it's a real treat and worth a trip to the station itself. Huge windows (perfect for a train), large glass Victorian vaulted ceiling, wood paneling and polished floors create an airy yet warm feel, but the focus here is rightly on the real ale. There are 32 beers to choose from, all of which are top quality and well served. There's also a small selection of wines and spirits, but bar snacks are all you want to eat, so don't come on an empty stomach.

BrewDog

A warehouse-style space in Micklegate that, although a little empty on quieter evenings, brings BrewDog's excellent beers on tap within the city walls. As its beers proudly announce, the fair choice is a fresh and tasty margarita, meaning dogs flock here for quality drinks and conversation with slightly nasty ingredients, even at £4+ a pint. There are also delicious pizzas from around £8/£9 (the 'Hero' ham goes perfectly with a glass of IPA) as well as several salami nibble options. What it may lack in weeknight atmosphere, BrewDog more than makes up for in versatile flavor.

Biltmore Bar & Grill

This beautifully decorated modern bar with an Art Deco twist is a favorite for the well-heeled and well-heeled. It's also one of the best in York, combining a stylish interior with efficient service, delicious cocktails and a good wine list. Food includes delicious pastas, pizzas, ribs and risotto dishes, or choose from the more refined (and more expensive) Vintage menu. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the black onyx bar on the ground floor, where regular champagne tastings are designed to demystify the good stuff.

Valhalla

The term "theme bar" might be enough to get your blood pumping, but Valhalla pulls it off with aplomb. This Norwegian bar and cafe just around the corner from the Shambles (opposite Pivni) opened to rave reviews. It was created by Viking fanatics Matt Bedingham and Vincent Roberts, who put a lot of effort into the decoration. Lovely touches include a skull and horn in a glass cabinet, flickering electric candles and heavy oak tables as rough as Thor himself. The music is mostly rock and there is a good selection of wine, spirits and beer, with Wolf Rock Red IPA and Chieftain Irish Pale Ale on tap and, from Brew York, Viking DNA.

House of Trembling Madness

This York institution on bustling Stonegate began operations in 1180. as the first Norman house in the city. It shows its age – in the best possible way – and the original vaulted beamed ceilings, stuffed animal heads and plenty of nooks and crannies equal medieval charm. There is a wine and beer shop on the ground floor (one of the largest ranges of craft beer in the UK) and a bar upstairs serving a large selection of beers, ales, ciders and wines. The pub is above average: hamburgers, stews and huge meat and fish platters made from local products. It's crowded on Friday and Saturday nights.

Maltingovi

The old building that houses The Maltings is dwarfed by its massive modern neighbours, so you'd be forgiven for overlooking this little slice of peace and quiet just above Lendal Bridge. Decorated with faded brewery signs and a bar and ceiling made of old doors, the age is clearly felt and everyone must respect the no 'children' and 'vibrancy' sign. Enjoy a quiet pint from a great selection of regularly changing and decently priced beers, including our own local brewery, and tuck into generous portions of lasagne, toast and potato skins at really reasonable prices.

Fossgate Social

Run by brother and sister Mike and Sarah Lakin, this cosy, two-storey licensed coffee bar sits amongst a number of fellow independents in Fossgate, which is fast making a name for itself as York's foodie quarter. The original brick walls, stripped wooden floor and soft lighting (upstairs is a more refined space with paneled walls and plush sofas) create a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and you can enjoy a cocktail or Brooklyn Lager on tap as well as your espresso caffeine fix. Every Tuesday night there are regular times for live music and open mic.

Beer

At the heart of this watering hole are beers that are as good as you'd expect from the team that brought you one of Britain's best train station bars, The York Tap. Gathering from every corner of the world in the bustling downstairs bar, you have all kinds of draft and bottled beer, including excellent American IPAs, continental craft beers and more options for the home. Add to that some taste sensations like Magic Rock's 'Chipotle Punchline' chocolate porter and left-field discoveries like a very drinkable IPA from Toccalmatto Brewery in Italy, and you begin to understand why it's a place that's always packed with devotees.

Theater Royal in York

For a non-drinking option (although you may still be drawn to the bar), the beautiful York Theater Royal is one of the oldest theaters in the UK and has a wide program of consistently quality actors, with established shows and emerging drama and dance in the main room and studio areas. With new seating, a new stage and sound system, the concrete and glass extension, built in 1967 and looking a little dilapidated until now, now has disabled access, an expanded cafe and bar, and a gorgeous color change to the lighting system.

Cook York

Brew York, the craft brewery on Walmgate, known for its visitor tours and taproom, has been expanding rapidly and now has a beer and food room in the building next door - a 550 square meter warehouse. with an outside terrace overlooking the River Ouse. The cave-like space serves about 40 craft beers and ciders, and there's also a separate kitchen - Born to Lose - serving up burgers, fried chicken and small plates of locally sourced ingredients. There is also a pop-up shop selling beers, guest beers and t-shirts.

The Golden Fleece

Charming floors and doors, dark bars and beams, open fires and ghost stories told in hushed tones over candlelit tables make this intimate pub an atmospheric stop on any York drinking tour. Reputed to be the city's most haunted watering hole, dating back 500 years - and if the many reports of paranormal activity are to be believed, the chances of a quiet pint are slim. They serve afternoon tea with cakes, sandwiches and a decent all-day menu that includes everything from moules mariniere to the signature Golden Fleece burgers. Beers such as Theakston's Old Peculier and Skipton's classic Golden Pippin are winners, served by friendly staff ready for spooky viewing.
